Lonicera x heckrottii 'Goldflame', commonly known as Goldflame honeysuckle or Lonicera Goldflame, is a deciduous climbing vine that is prized for its attractive foliage and fragrant flowers.
The Goldflame honeysuckle features oval-shaped leaves that emerge with a bronze-red color, later transitioning to a rich green shade. The leaves are arranged in an opposite pattern along the stems. The real highlight of this plant, however, is its flowers.
In late spring or early summer, Goldflame honeysuckle produces clusters of tubular flowers that are highly fragrant. The flowers start as pink buds and open to reveal tubular blooms with an orange or pinkish-orange outer color and a golden-yellow inner color. The combination of colors creates a captivating and eye-catching display. The flowers also attract pollinators like hummingbirds and butterflies.
Goldflame honeysuckle is a climbing vine and can grow up to 15 to 20 feet (4.5 to 6 meters) in height. It requires a support structure such as a trellis, fence, or wall to climb on. It is often used to cover fences, arbors, or pergolas, providing both vertical interest and a splash of color.
This honeysuckle variety is relatively low-maintenance and adaptable. It prefers well-drained soil and thrives in full sun to partial shade conditions. Regular pruning can help maintain its shape and promote better flowering.
