BROMELIADS
Flowering
Period: Available year round at florists.
Flowerhead arises from center of rosette leaves and
can last for months. Several different varieties
available. Some of the most popular being:
Aechmeas - they have a distinct center vase
from which a large flowerhead emerges. Fusciata has
silvery colored leaves with a large pink bloom.
Fulgens has green leaves with bright redish orange
berry like flower.
Guzmanias - slightly less stiff leaf than
the Aechmeas: the large flowerheads come in a very
wide variety of colors.
Neoregelias - lower growing plants, often
having colorful foliage that is often more showy than
the blooms.
Light: Bright indirect light or a small amount of
direct sun.
Water: When soil is very dry across the surface do
not leave plants sitting in excess water nor repot
into a large container.
Many
people recommend keeping water in the central cup of
the plant from where the flowers emerge but this water
should be dumped and refreshed often.
Special Notes: After flowering the plant will
gradually begin to die. It is replaced by offshoot
plants around the base of the older plant.
