ASTILBE
A Perennial Favorite
 Astilbe plants are a perennial favorite among many gardeners. They are an attractive addition to any landscape. Astilbes prefer a moist, rich soil in a partly shaded area. Astilbes will perform in full sun, but they must have enough water! The dark green, finely dissected foliage is attractive in all seasons, and makes a great background for the colorful plumes.

Astilbe flowers come in red, white, pink, and lavender tones. The size and shape of the plume varies depending on the variety. If you cut the plumes before they are completely open, they last very well as a cut flower. The plumes can also be used for drying.  Many gardeners leave the faded plumes on the plant until the following spring to provide winter interest. For a tidier fall appearance, remove the faded flowers and let the interesting foliage fill the garden space.
